Third-year students in Gowrie Senior High Technical School beat up teacher for attempting to prevent them from punishing a fellow student

Students of Gowrie Senior High/Technical School in the Bongo district of the Upper East Region on Wednesday night went on rampage destroying school properties over the prevention of punishment of their colleague students by a teacher of the school.

According to reports, the third-year students who were angered by the seizure of their mobile phone by teachers had a scuffle with one the teachers who came to the boys dormitory to prevent them from punishing a colleague student.

The actions by the students were condemned by school authorities which sparked angry attacks by the students who destroyed some properties of the school.

Confirming the incident on Daybreak Upper East show on A1 Radio, the District Chief Executive for Bongo District, Peter Ayinbisa noted that the immediate cause of the riot by the students is yet to be established.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service also told A1 Radio that at the time of the riot their men were on the ground to maintain calm but later got attacked by the students, who smashed the windscreen of a patrol vehicle.

The Upper East Regional Public Relations Officer of the Police Service, ASP David Fianko-Okyere said, the students upon seeing their patrol team vehicles at the entrance of the school started throwing stones but their men were calm because they did not want to escalate the situation.

But according to a female student, when the police arrived at the school they were ushered to the boys dormitory by the school teachers were the boys were subjected to severe beatings which triggered a retaliation from the students.
