Residents and commuters of Uwasi -Fumbisi road in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region are alleging that an unknown contractor, who is said to be a big party member with the New Patriotic Party in the Northern Region has used materials that can not stand the test of time to construct culverts on the Uwasi – Fumbisi road.

According to the residents, one of the reasons they used to detect that the contractor used such materials to construct some of the culverts was that some of the culverts started breaking few days after being covered with gravel for usage.

The situation they say is making movement through the road worrisome especially when they are traveling on heavy vehicles.

Speaking on A1 Radio, the Assembly member for the Uwasi electoral area, George Asuik noted that, his checks revealed that the said contractor is a known party chairman with a construction firm called Samba Co. Ltd in the Northern Region.

According to him, his checks also revealed that the contract was awarded to Samba Co. Ltd on April 5th, 2018 from “the above” and neither the Assembly nor the residents have knowledge of him as they have never seen him personally on-site except his workers.

He said “ Our worry as residents and commuters are that rains have set in and looked at the nature of the road if care is not taken, many people would end up losing their lives. The thing is that some of the culverts are broken, some too, are left uncovered. We just don’t know our fate as commuters when passing through the road.”

Stressing on the importance of the road, Mr. Asuik stated that it is the only and most shortcut road that links residents from Uwasi to Fumbisi market and Jadema to North East Region.

The 33.5km stretch of road the residents noted could be a game-changer to their lives if properly worked on.

Meanwhile, at the time of filing this report, efforts were made to the District Assembly and that of the said contractor but to no avail.
