UW/R: Heavy rains damage road, leave residents of Kassana stranded

Heavy rains have washed off portions of the road connecting Kassana and Tumu in the Sissala East Municipality of the Upper West Region. This occurred at a portion of the road where there is a concreate bridge, thereby exposing the bridge and making the road impassable.

The situation has left residents of the Kassana community stranded. According to the Assembly Member for the Kassana Electoral Area, Daalah Abdallah Tordia, a similar situation occurred last year but the Department of Feeder Roads fixed.

A portion of the road washed away

In an interview with A1 Radio, Mr Tordia said after repair works were carried out, he expressed worry to the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area that the work carried out could not last long.

“Last year, the same bridge was washed away and the current Member of Parliament who was the then Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, came with some people to work on it, but I told them that it would not last. I told them that it will be temporal because I doubt whether it was strong and this year the havoc caused is worse than what happened last year,” he recalled.

According the Assembly Member, residents who mainly engage in farming activities cannot cart agricultural inputs from the municipal capital, Tumu, to the community. He said this will in turn delay the activities of farmers and could have serious effects on the income of farmers and food security of community members.

He was optimistic that following a conversation with the MP who doubles as Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Amidu Chinnia Issahaku and the MCE for Sissala East, Karim Nanyua, the bridge would be fixed as a matter of urgency.

Mr Tordia appealed for a better repair work to be carried out to prevent the situation from repeating in the coming years.
