Out of the 15 Municipal and District Assemblies in the Upper East Region, the Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly has been adjudged as the best performing assembly in the region for the year 2020.

The assembly scored 88.19 percent and rated “Excellent” in the “Overall Performance Delivery” placing 10th position of the National Rankings of all the 260 Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the country in 2020 Annual Local Government Service Performance Contract.

The 260 assemblies in the country at the beginning of every year, sign the performance contract with the Local Government Ministry. This contract is not only serving as a tool for monitoring and evaluating service delivery but will encourage competition among the MMDAs.

Among some key indicators for rating the assemblies include education, general administration, financial management and reporting, human resource management, health care delivery, water, sanitation, good governance, security among others.

District Chief Executive for the Kassena-Nankana West, Gerald Ataogye said he was not surprised by the recognition because the district in the year 2020 exceeded its Open Defecation Free (ODF) target and was emerged as the best-performed district in the Upper East region which is contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 6 by 2030.

Talking on infrastructure, the DCE said the assembly carried out the construction of a lorry park at the Paga border post to facilitate free movement of goods and services to and from neighboring Burkina Faso, while some health and educational facilities were put in place to improve health and education delivery.

“In all the key performance indicators, we did well that is why we became first in the region and placed 10th out of the 260 assemblies. What led to this achievement is as a result of trust, hard work, respect, and learning from one another, self-motivation, and the ultimate being the will of God.”

To clamp down armed robbery cases in the district, he said the assembly constructed a road from Paga to Kayoro to shorten the routes for security patrols in the district and neighboring Kassena-Nankana East Municipal.

“The district shares a boundary with Burkina Faso and so because of the porous routes in the border town, and the inaccessible roads, the security personnel are now using motorbikes to fight crime and that is commendable, even though they need more logistics and personnel.”

He commended the District Coordinating Director, Abubakari Amadu for the supervisory role he plays and the other staff of the assembly that saw the assembly attaining what he described as “an enviable achievement”.

Nonetheless, Mr. Ataogye said the staff of the assembly will not relent in their efforts to improve the delivery of service to the people of the Kassena-Nankana West District.

The Kassena-Nankana East Municipal came second in the Upper East Region with a rating 84.07 percent while the Binduri District came last in the region with an “Unsatisfactory” score of 47.57 percent.
