Navrongo Senior High School has won the regional level of the second edition of the Energy Commission (EC) Senior High Schools’ Renewable Energy Challenge organized in the Upper East Region.
The school emerged winner with 74 points with its ethanol stock cooker beating Bolgatanga Senior High School which was second with 73 points, Sirigu Integrated Senior High School was third with 70.3 points.
The remaining school included Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School with 69 points, Our Lady Lourdes Senior High School with 68.3 points, Bawku Technical Senior High School with 67.6 points, Gowrie Senior High School with 67 points, and Bawku Senior High School with 62 points.
The school and its students however assured the region of winning the National competition.
The Energy Commission of Ghana, as part of its efforts to tackle greenhouse emissions and energy crises, has set up a renewable energy challenge amongst Senior High Schools in the country.
The initiative seeks to prepare and unearth students’ talents on how to use cheap and affordable products to generate energy to tackle the energy crises as well as greenhouse emissions.
It is also aimed to develop the research skills of Senior High School students and promote technological innovation in renewable energy & energy efficiency as well as instil in students a passion for solving renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate change challenges through innovative research.
The Energy Commission also awarded each school with certificates of participation and cash prize of Ghc500.00.
The Chief Programme Officer in charge of Bio-energy at the Energy Commission and also the Project Coordinator for the Senior High School Renewable Energy Challenge, Julius Nkansah-Nyarko noted that schools that have their projects selected will be offered a platform to showcase their projects at the Annual Ghana Renewable Energy Fair where the most outstanding projects will be awarded prizes.
The Upper East Regional Coordinator of the Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation Education Madam Faustina Agetara however congratulated the winning school and asked to focus more on their project to bring the trophy home.
