In spite of agitations and rejections by some teachers over the 4 to 7 percent salary increments, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has said it cannot go back to the negotiation table with the government.

The President of the union, Madam Philipa Larson has explained that the leadership of the teacher union is not happy with the 4 to 7 percent salary increments announced by the government, but it has little to do in terms of reversing the situation.

Madam Larsen said this on A1 Radio’s DayBreak Upper East show on Tuesday August 3, 2021 in  response to the locking up of the union’s office in Navrongo by some angry teachers.

The angry teachers on August 2, 2021 locked up their union office in Navrongo saying it has failed to properly negotiate with the government on their welfare.

But giving assurance to the teachers, Madam Larson entreated them not to overreact to emotions as the union and its executive members are working on the clock to address the concerns affecting all teachers.

“We are all not happy as a union. You go to the market; I equally do. So, I expect them to be calm as we work around the clock. We are not sleeping on it, but I can not also assure that we can go back to the negotiation table with the government for now”, she stressed.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the angry teachers, Mr Atadana Felix has warned that their action was just the beginning as they will not stop until they see proper negotiation from the union.

He said that teachers expect 20 percent salary increments from the government so the union must stand on that or risk seeing more from them.
