Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu has appealed to health professionals in the Upper East Region most especially specialists to stay in the region and contribute their quota towards healthcare delivery.

He has cautioned against the desire of health professionals to ask for transfer to other parts of the country to the detriment of the Upper East Region.

Mr Yakubu was speaking in an interaction with hospital staff of the Upper East Regional Hospital when he paid a working visit to the facility. He said their call to duty is a call to serve mankind and not to make money though money is important.

The minister observed that life in the northern part of the country is moderate and comfortable as compared to other parts of the country and cautioned that if care is not taken, health professionals who seek greener pastures in other regions especially Accra will spend a greater part of their salaries on transportation because the terrible nature of traffic situation can affect their living standards.

Mr Yakubu said his office is working hard to elevate one of the District Hospitals in the region to a Polyclinic and also elevate the Upper East Regional Hospital to the staus of a Teaching Hospital which will attract more health professionals to the region.

He expressed his commitment to resolving all outstanding land litigations surrounding the regional hospital to give maximum protection to staff and management of the hospital.

Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi pleaded with the minister to help the Regional Hospital resolve the land problem which is depriving the facility of the necessary development.

He noted that almost all the District Hospitals face similar problem but with the commitment of the Regional Minister he was optimistic the problem would be resolved soon to facilitate better health care system.

The Minister was taken round the new structure under construction which include doctors’ flat, Maternity Block, Neonatal Building, Mortuary, car pack among others.
