Former President, John Dramani Mahama has called on government to request the services of the 48 Engineer Regiment, a branch of the military, in a effort to fix the damaged roads as quickly as practicable.

It would be recalled that on Friday, August 13, torrential rains devastated parts of the Upper West Region washing off sections of the Wa-Nadowli-Lawra-Hamile road.

Mr Mahama said the current nature of the road is affecting the economic activities of the people of the region making life unbearable for them.

The former President shared these sentiments when he visited the Overlord of the Waala Traditional Area, Naa Fuseini Pelpuo as part of his day’s visit to the region.

Mr Mahama is in the region to express gratitude to the chief and people of the area for the support in the recent 2020 election.

He said “I am going to proceed to Daffiama and Nadowli to inspect the conditions of the victims of the flood that took place recently. I want to draw the President’s attention to it. People are suffering, their items and properties have been destroyed and the roads have been cut off. There is a backlog of trucks that were heading to Burkina Faso and other places that are all stranded on the road”.

The Former President expressed worry about the security implications of the situation and questioned the veracity of the security reports the president received.

“I don’t know if the president is receiving proper security reports but it is a very serious situation and I think the President should take action. If we can get the military, the 48 engineer regiment to come in with some emergency action, they can open up the road quickly so that the transport of goods and passengers can continue to flow. Otherwise, it is creating a very serious situation in this country, ” the former President stressed.

Mr Mahama was also unhappy about the nature of the Wa-Sawla road. He said the road had quickly deteriorated and needed the quick attention of government.

“I travelled along the Sawla-Wa road yesterday and it is in a very deplorable state. When we were in office, every year we used to maintain this road to keep the riding surface in good condition. I was very disappointed when I came yesterday night. The road is deteriorating at a very fast pace and if the government does not wake up to do something about it that road will be completely destroyed and we have to reconstruct it anew,” he said.
