The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly in the Upper East Region has served notice to embark on an exercise to arrest stray animals in the regional capital.
Stray animals especially cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, and donkeys are seen on daily basis loitering in the middle of the roads and in even on the Tamale-Bolgatanga-Navrongo highway.
The issue of these animals in the capital town is a worry as they pose a great threat to both pedestrians and motorists since their uncontrolled movement has caused several accidents and even deaths.
In some instances, traders have had their foodstuff destroyed by stray animals. These animals that roam aimlessly in the municipality litter the environment through the droppings.
But speaking to A1 NEWS, Convener of the Justice and Security Sub-committee of the assembly, Francis Aduko Ayine has hinted that the assembly will soon embark on a massive exercise to raid off all stray animals in the town.
“Bolgatanga has attained the status of a municipality so it is expected that things will be done to befit the status of a municipality. But what we see is animals roaming aimlessly and causing accidents and even deaths. These animals destroy cereals belonging to market women. And aside from that they litter and make the town very dirty. So that is why the assembly has seen it necessary to embark on the exercise to arrest the animals.”
He said owners of animals will be made to pay a fee when the animals are confiscated “and individuals who are resisting or not willing to comply will be made to face the law”.
Mr. Ayine has therefore entreated owners to keep their animals confined at all times to protect lives and properties.
