Wa West Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Lanchene Toobu, has said former President John Dramani Mahama’s “do-or-die” remark about the 2024 election was not hard enough.

Mr. Mahama made the comment in an interview on Akina FM in Techiman during his “Thank-You-Tour” of the Bono Region.

He believes the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the 2020 general elections but was robbed of victory and having learned lessons from that, the NDC will ensure that same is not repeated come 2024.

But speaking on Daybreak Upper East on A1 Radio, the Wa West MP who is a former secretary to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) said “President John Dramani Mahama is not hard enough. He is not hard enough with the statement that in 2024, it will be do-or-die at the polling station.”

Mr. Toobu explained that “It’s not necessarily to mean killing people. What it means is that we’re going to do the needful to ensure that no more stupidity like what happened in Techiman- South will happen anywhere.”

Responding to concerns that the comment by Mr. Mahama could influence NDC members to be violent in the next election, Mr. Toobu said “There is something in security; if somebody slaps you and you slap back and you go and sit at the table to negotiate, the person takes you for granted. If somebody slaps you even in conflict resolution, and you want the person to reason that it is bad to slap, give the person a double slap. And when you call the people together at the round table to talk, he remembers his double slap, you remember your single slap and all of you reason that slapping is a stupid thing to do. So let’s stop.”

“What former President Mahama was saying is that lessons learnt from 2020 elections, lessons learnt from taking the case to court, statements made by the court itself suggests that do waste your time goiung to the court during elections when you can actually do what is right at the polling station.” He added.

The MP however maintained that “the former president has a character trait and that character trait is that he is a very peaceful man. That he doesn’t want to have blood spilled for him to become president again. He has demonstrated one more time in 2020 that he is indeed a peaceful man.”
