UER: Contractor working on Uwasi-Fumbisi road is punishment from gov’t to us -Assembly Man

Assembly Member for the Uwasi electoral area in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region, George Asuiyok, has said that the struggles commuters and residents go through on daily basis on the Uwasi-Fumbisi stretch of road is nothing but a deliberate punishment sent from government to the people of the area.

According to him, the inaccessible nature of the road was causing a lot of havoc to residents to the extent that a woman recently lost her pregnancy on her way to the community health centre due to over delays on the road.

He said potions of the road, including culverts have been washed away due to recent heavy rains in the region, making it dangerous for commuters especially children and pregnant women to use the road.

“As an Assembly member, since the beginning of the road to its current state, I have never had any rest. Initially, when the contractor finished working on the road culverts, within few weeks after covering them with gravel, they started cracking. We (he, residents and commuters) made a lot of calls to this contractor but nothing has happened. The contractor never answers our calls or any from the district level. If he is not a punishment sent by the government to punish us here, tell me why is he not coming to our aid.” Mr. Asuiyok told A1 Radio in an interview.

Stressing on the importance of the road, the Assembly Member noted that it was the only and most convenient route that linked residents from Uwasi to Fumbisi market as well as Kadema to the North East Region.

Meanwhile, information available to A1 Radio indicates that the 33.5km road was awarded on April 5, 2018, to Samba Company Limited, a construction firm belonging to a known party chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Northern Region.

The information further indicates that the contractor neither answered calls from the Builsa South District Assembly nor Member of Parliament (MP) of the area in relation to the road construction works.
