Constituency Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Navrongo Central in the Upper East Region, Moses Amoah, has lashed out at critics of the decision by Government to purchase a new presidential jet; asking if they expect President Akufo-Addo to travel by a commercial tricycle popularly known as ‘Mahama Cando’?

There has been public debate for some months now after Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, raised concerns and subsequently filed urgent questions in Parliament demanding disclosure of the full cost of President Akufo-Addo’s recent foreign trips and why government was not using the use of the current presidential jet.

In order to settle the controversies on foreign trips and cost to the state, the government through the communications Director at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin on Monday, September 27, 2021, revealed that the Interior Minister had commenced processes to acquire a new presidential aircraft to save the country from costs.

This again has not gone down well with a section of the public especially the opposition National Democratic Congress with its leadership in Parliament threatening to stifle the process when deal is laid before parliament for approval.

But speaking on Daybreak Upper East show on A1 Radio, Mr. Amoah wondered what else the critics of Government’s expenses on foreign travels expected.

“The NDC, you said the Man [President Akufo-Addo] shouldn’t hire a private jet. Now, government said we want to acquire a new jet and you still say no. So which one do you want? You want the president to travel with a Cando?”

Mr. Amoah went on to argue that the new presidential jet, when purchased, will not only be used for foreign travels by the president; but also to move military personnel for international peace keeping assignments.
