The Election Supervision Committee (ESC) of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has unanimously agreed for the association to compile a new list of members in good standing for its upcoming elections.

The GJA elections meant to select executives for the association in the various regions was expected to have taken place on Sunday, October 3, 2021, but have been suspended indefinitely, pending the compilation of the new membership list.

The decision to compile the new list of members came as a result of some anomalies detected in the existing register to be used for the election.

A letter to the secretariat of GJA signed by the Chairman of the Election Supervision Committee, Charles Benoni Okine, indicated that the decision follows a meeting of members of the committee on Thursday, September 30; adding that the move was in the interest of peace.

By the said letter, the GJA was requested among other things to ensure that the new register is trusted by all as a working document and for easy reference.

ELECTION SUPERVISION COMMITTEE, GJA

The Administrator

Ghana International Press Centre

Ministries, Accra

October 1, 2021

Dear Sir

COMPILATION OF FULL LIST OF MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING OF THE GHANA JORUNALISTS ASSOCIATION.

I wish to request the secretariat of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to compile a full list of our members in good standing for submission by close of day, Monday, October 4, 2021.

This development has come about as a result of a meeting of members of the Election Supervision Committee (ESC), which was held at the Press Centre on Thursday, September 30.

At the said meeting, it was unanimously agreed by the committee for us to have a new list of members in good standing in the interest of peace. This is expected to be used for the conduct of the national elections after members have scrutinized and approved it for its intended purpose.

Demands.

To ensure that the list is trusted by all as a working document and for easy reference, I wish to demand the following.

ALL names on the list must have the media houses of the members clearly indicated
Where any member(s) do not belong to a media house, it must also be indicated if they are freelancers or not.
Names of retirees must also be clearly marked.
This request has become necessary because it will offer the members of the committee the opportunity to verify the names on the list and make appropriate comments if any.

As chairman of the committee, I am willing to be of assistance in any form to ensure that we work together transparently to provide a fair platform for members to freely exercise their franchise for us to elect our new leaders into office.

I wish you all the best in this endeavor and express the hope that, you will use your good offices to help defuse the tension within the association and restore confidence and trust among all the aspirants.

Yours faithfully,

Charles Benoni Okine

Chairman, ESC
