The Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Rex Asanga has made a passionate call on business owners and individuals in the municipality to honor their tax responsibilities to help the assembly mobilize funds for the needed development. Mr. Asanga said the assembly is cash-strapped, the reason why most projects have come to a standstill.

“We need to take a second look at how we are going to mobilize our revenue. We have to really be up and doing to really mobilize revenue, either than that, a lot of things that we are not able to do and people are saying that the assembly is supposed to do this, the Assembly is supposed to do that. We have sanitation problems, the street lights, traffic lights sometimes are not working and people expect the assembly to come in quickly to rectify some of these things.”

It is against this backdrop that Mr. Asanga expressed fears that the failure of people to honor their taxes responsibility will only make it difficult for the assembly to fix these life-threatening issues.

The MCE was speaking to journalists shortly after a public hearing of the assembly’s 2022 composite budget. According to Mr. Asanga, a task force will reach out to individuals to engage them on the modalities of how they can pay their taxes with ease.

“We need to set up a task force to look at all the areas. For instance, artisanal trade and all that. How many of them are paying? What percentage of them are paying? Is it that they are incapable of paying or they are just refusing to pay? Or we as an assembly are unable to reach out to them.”

Touching on the newly constructed Abattoir at Yorigo, the Municipal Chief Executive said he will liaise with the butchers to see the way forward in order to put the edifice to use. This according to him will provide some jobs for the people around the Yorigo area and increase the assembly’s revenue.

The Municipal Budget Officer, Daudab Issahaku Saari projected an amount of to be mobilized by the Assembly for 2022 fiscal year. He added that the assembly intends to improve some of the existing health centers and construct new ones to augment the existing health facilities in the municipality.

He further indicated that the assembly is constructing a market for people in the auto mechanic industry at the outskirts of the municipality close to BOST along the Bolgatanga – Tamale road which will house all the mechanics. The new site will be made up of restaurants, a school and fire station to take care of any eventuality.

The Bolgatanga Municipal 2022 composite budget hearing had in attendance the Regional Minister, Coordinating Director, the Municipal Budget Officer and personnel from the physical planning unity of the assembly, senior citizens, traders, butchers, assembly members, and the media.
