More than one hundred (100) women in Bihee, a community in the Wa Municipality, are expected to have their breasts examined over the weekend. The women will also be given education on proper care for breasts and detection of unusual lumps. They will also be screened for Hepatitis B.

The breast screening exercise forms part of activities by concerned organisations across the world to celebrate the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Speaking to A1radio, the Executive Director of the Beautiful Smiles Project Maria Johana Yuorpor mentioned that it has become necessary for her organisation to do their bit to support the global agenda to raise awareness on breast cancer and its related issues.

The focus of the exercise, she said, is rural vegetable farmers who ordinarily may be unable to access these services on their own. The women may also be unaware of some of the complications that may arise from improper care of breasts.

“It is breast cancer awareness month. These women are into vegetable farming thus the need for them to check their health status regularly,” she said.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is an annual international health campaign organised by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.
