Vice President of Bawku Senior High School’s Old Students Association (BOSA), Alhaji Abdallah Otiti Achuliwor has blamed the falling standards of education in northern Ghana on authorities being strict in the enforcement of examination rules.
In an interview on Daybreak Upper East program on A1radio ahead of the BOSA homecoming, Mr. Otiti, who doubles as a board member of the Bawku Senior High School, said the failure of authorities to create an ambiance for students to copy in examinations, is what has accounted for the downturn of academic performances across the five regions of the north in recent times, which is in stark contrast to what exists in other new jurisdictions.
He added that the northerners’ insatiable desire for everything to be done in an appropriate manner was crippling education in that enclave.
“It is just that they have made the environment such that they are not allowed to copy the examinations, they are not able to cheat in the examinations that will enable them to make the grades. So, at the end of the day, you see the northern schools at the bottom of the league table because we want to still remain ‘pepepe’, which means the person still wants to do everything exactly. So, our schools want to do it ‘pepepe’, meanwhile elsewhere it might not necessarily be like that,” said Otiti.
Mr. Otiti also observed that the lack of required cut-off points for potential senior high students was contributory to the sharp decline in the academic performances of northern students.
He however stated that the dwindling way of performances recorded in the north lately would be improved if they (northerners) emulate their colleagues in the south.
Old Students of Bawku Senior High School (BOSA) will among other things Saturday, October 30, 2021 commission a borehole on the school’s campus to eradicate the shortage of water that often confronts the school as part of activities to mark the ‘BOSA’ homecoming.
The theme for this year’s event is “Addressing Educational Challenges in the midst of COVID-19, The Role of the Alumni”.
