Fix Wa-Tumu-Bolga road now – UWR Youth Parliament to gov’t

The Upper West Regional Youth Parliament is unhappy that more than three decades after the creation of the Upper West Region from the then Upper Region, the region still does not have a properly constructed road linking it to its neighbour, the Upper East Region.

Addressing the Media at a Press Conference at Wa, Speaker of the Youth Parliament, Mr. James Anabiga described the situation as rather unfortunate. He said while other regions were asking for their inter-regional roads to be rehabilitated, the Upper West Region is still pleading with government to for the first time, properly construct the Wa-Tumu-Bolga road. The road, Mr Anabiga stated has been in a sorry state since 1983, when the region was created.

“It is no longer news that the Upper West Region, one of the divided regions from the then Upper Region (now Upper East Region) still has no good road linking the two regional capitals, Bolgatanga and Wa. Whilst some other regions are currently calling for rehabilitation of their tarred roads that went bad, the Upper West Region is yet to see a fully constructed tarred road for easy access to the Upper East Region despite the countless campaign promises by successive governments. Some might argue that contractors are working on it and therefore no need bringing it up in this press conference but the fact still remains that, contractors have been on that stretch of the road in time past and the road is still not completed,” the Speaker said.

The Regional Youth Parliament also raised concerns over the abandoned ‘affordable housing project’ in the Wa Municipality. The project was started in 2007 under former President John Agyekum Kufuor. The project has since stalled. Through the press conference, the Upper West Regional Youth Parliament urged the current administration to ensure the project is completed to help address the increasing housing challenge in the region.

The Upper West Regional Youth Parliament is a non-partisan, non-religious, non-tribal and nonprofit making advocacy youth group who advocate for development and the well-being of the youth. It was established in 2010 and has been able to, with support from the National Youth Authority, establish and inaugurate District and Municipal Youth Parliaments across the region.
