The Member of Parliament (MP) for Sissala East who doubles as the Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Amidu Chinnia Issahaku has added his voice to the conversation around the expansion of legal education in Ghana. Mr. Issahaku speaking on the floor of Parliament stated that the inadequacy of lawyers has negative consequences on the justice system within the five regions of the north.

“Mr. Speaker, if you go to the five regions of the north, they have very few lawyers. Because of that, a lot of people do not get access to justice,” he said

He implored on the Ghana Legal Council (GLC), to expand access to professional legal education for two reasons. He explained that in the northern half of the country, particularly his Constituency, Sissala East, persons interested in engaging the services of lawyers have to travel several kilometres to the Upper West Regional Capital, Wa or the Upper East Regional Capital, Bolgatanga. This, he said deepens the financial woes of the already impoverished people in the area.

According to the Legislator, increasing intake into Ghana’s School of Law would go a long way to improve the justice system in the country. Furthering his argument, the law maker said due to increased access to LLB programmes across the country by both private and public universities, many Ghanaians graduate each year from these courses hoping to become certified practicing lawyers by schooling at Ghana’s School of Law. To contained the ever increasing numbers, the only way forward, as he sees it, it to create more room to allow more people take professional law courses.
