As Ghana prepares to celebrate Farmer’s Day on December 3, a young farmer in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region has called on the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to devise means that will motivate youth into the agricultural sector.

According to Mr. Moses Apiah, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture ought to begin putting in strategies that will start awarding young farmers at various districts and municipalities on each Farmer’s Day celebration.

The initiative if implemented, the young farmer noted, will go a long way to motivate youth into the sector and also serve as a competitive market for other engaging youth.

The young farmer who spoke to A1 Radio noted that one of the several reasons some Ghanaian youth are not willing to venture into the sector is because those already in the business have not been recognized and motivated.

He said “You see, most of the youth are not willing to venture into farming because they see it as a sector that is not rewarding. Those who are in it, do not get recognized. Authorities in the sector are not willing to uplift and reward youth who are engaged in farming. For instance, on Farmer’s Day like this, a category should have been created to reward emerging young farmers at various districts and municipalities to encourage others into it.”

Mr Moses Apiah who has been venturing into maize farming for the past three years, however, called on youth who may want to venture into the farming sector to do so as farming is now a business, unlike in the days before.
