Navrongo Senior High School, popularly known as NAVASCO is the oldest and most prestigious secondary school in the Upper East Region. It is also considered among the elite schools in the country. NAVASCO was established in September 1960.

The school marked its 60th year in existence in September 2020, however, due to the global outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the anniversary was rescheduled to 2021. The week-long celebration was rounded up on Saturday 6th November 2021 in grand style.

People from all walks of life converged at the Kassardjian Stadium, the Navrongo Senior High School’s park, to celebrate the climax of the anniversary. The school which started with 66 students and 4 teachers was commissioned by the first president of Ghana Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Dr. Nkrumah gave a staggering prophecy about the school in its logbook. He wrote that “this school has a great future. I will watch its progress with great interest”. The words of Dr. Nkrumah have become a reality as the school has produced many great and influencial people who have and are contributing immensely to the growth of the country. From 66 students and 4 teachers, the school has grown to a current student population of 2,124 with 191 teachers.

This amongst other achievements puts NAVASCO on a pedestal that is envied across Northern Ghana. One is left with nothing but to agree with the motto of the School which is ‘Lux Borealis’ directly translating to ‘The Light of the North’.

The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, who was the Guest Speaker of the occasion summarized the value of NAVASCO. He said “The School has produced so many prominent citizens, contributing their quota in diverse ways to national and global development. The Old Students are found in all walks of life such as governance, academia, medicine, engineering, industry, the security services, administration, education, business, the Bar and Bench, culture and religion”.

Dr. Bawumia continued by saying “more so, old Navascans have made their presence felt in the different political regimes in the country. In the current Parliament, a good number of the Parliamentarians are NABIA including my good friend the Minority Leader, Honourable NABIA Haruna Iddrisu who was a Dining Hall Prefect of this school. The school has produced prominent national figures including Mr. Martin Amidu, Lawyer John Ndebugre, the former Chief of Defence Staff-Air Marshall (rtd.) Samson Oje, Major General Emmanuel Kotia and many others”.

Heaping praises on the contribution of the school to national development, the Vice President admitted that “this is a testament that NAVASCO indeed, is the light of the North”.

The climax of NAVASCO at 60 saw prominent personalities like the Vice President of Ghana, some Regional Ministers, Director-General of Ghana Education Service, Cabinet ministers, MDCs in Upper East, MPs from various Constituencies, Nabia Global and Nabia Ghana, chiefs from the northern and southern part of Ghana along with top personnel from the security services, members of CHASS both local and National and many more from diverse places.
