The Northern Ghana Association of New England (NGANE)-USA has handed over a handpump borehole to the people of Nungu Daborin, a community in Zuarungu in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region.

The provision of the borehole will enhance access to potable water towards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 6 by 2030.

President of NGANE, Dr. Valerian Nakaar in a speech read by Matilda Adombire-naba, on his behalf, indicated that the provision of potable water to deprived communities in Northern parts of Ghana is so dear to the hearts of members of NGANE.

“NGANE is therefore honored to present to the people of Nungu Daborin a source of clean drinking water in the hope that this little project will go a long way to improving the health and quality of lives of the people of Nungu Daborin”, he said.

The association exists “to help accelerate development in our communities at home in any way we can”, the statement by Dr. Nakaar added.

Northern Ghana Association of New England (NGANE) is an association of Ghanaians from Northern Ghana living in the United States of America.

The provision of the borehole to the people of Nungu Daborin was coordinated by Vivian Adombiri-naba, a member of NGANE and native of Zuarungu.

The president of NGANE admonished the beneficiary community to inculcate the habit of proper maintenance of the borehole to serve its purpose, which is to provide potable water to the people and animals.

“In return for this favor, NGANE expects the people of Nungu Daborin to collectively take good care of this borehole so that it will serve your water needs for a long time. We are convinced that the people of Nungu Daborin will claim this project as their own and be good caretakers of the borehole. Should you prove to be good stewards, it will go a long way to attracting other developmental initiatives coming from NGANE.”

The chief of Zuarungu -Daborin, Boyadaana Denis Baba Asaduku III thanked members of the association for the gesture saying that, the commission of the borehole was timely since access to clean, and safe drinking water makes life easier for the residents.

The women and girls who were particularly excited, sing, and hailed NGANE for the effort. Clement Atakimah Atinga, Doborin Assemblymember said the borehole will provide access to clean water to the community members especially women who by tradition are responsible for the provision of water to the household.

“The borehole that we were fetching from, is far away from us, and it is always overcrowded. And as a result, there were quarrels among the women as to who fetches first. On the part of students, when they go there to fetch water, they return home late and that was affecting their schooling. But now, we are happy that they have provided us with this borehole”, he said.

The assembly member who said their livestock were straying in search of water due to the non-availability of a dam in the community, heaved a sigh of relief that the borehole will serve as a source of water for animals.

Aside from the provision of clean and accessible water to rural folks in the 6 regions of northern Ghana, members of the Northern Ghana Association of New England in the USA have embarked upon supporting the educational needs of rural communities.

NGANE has also embarked on projects in areas of agriculture and health, towards the alleviation of poverty in northern Ghana.
