The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for Local Government Reforms under the auspices of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has kick-started Regional Stakeholder Consultative Engagements to amplify citizens’ voices around local government reforms, build consensus on critical issues for reform as well as secure broad base support and demand for action towards reforming Ghana’s local government system.

The major agenda is the conversation about the election of MMDCEs. The Upper West Regional Stakeholder Consultative forum underway in Wa brought together Civil Society Organisations, Labour Unions, women groups, chiefs, Queen Mothers, Media, Political Parties, Elected Assembly Members and other identifiable groups.

According to the Executive Director of the Community Development Alliance (CDA) Ghana Issifu Salifu Kanton, the regional consultative dialogue will dovetail into national level engagements leading to a reform agenda.

According to Mr. Kanton key questions posed to participants at the engagement include whether participants want elections of MMDCES, whether people prefer non-partisan elections at the local level, what is causing Ghanaians to become increasingly disenchanted with partisanship especially political and Electoral processes at the local level and how the non-partisan MMDCE can work together with assembly members who are affiliated to political parties.
