Bolgatanga Municipal Best Farmer questions the reluctance of youth in venturing into agriculture

The Bolgatanga Municipal Overall Best Farmer Ayamga Nyaaba Tomson has questioned why young people are unwilling to venture into the agricultural sector despite the plethora of prospects in the area.

Speaking to Media at this year’s Farmers day celebration under the theme “Planting for food and jobs – Consolidating for system in Ghana” at Yorogo in the Bolgatanga Municipality, Mr. Nyaaba expressed wonder why young people continue to disregard the sector.

According to him, agriculture remains one of the most lucrative sectors that needs to be fully focused on for the effective growth of the Ghanaian economy.

Mr. Nyaaba admonished the youth to see his award as motivation and be optimistic that if they venture into agriculture, their investments will bear dividends adding that they could also be publicly recognized in due course.

“I started farming when I was very young. I began working for farmers who had the financial capacity and farming skills. Now, I can see that majority of the youth do not want to invest in agriculture, I don’t know whether it is laziness or they don’t know the benefit of farming.

So I want to admonish the Youth of today, whether educated or uneducated to venture into agriculture because there is a lot of benefits in it,” he said.

Ayamga Nyaaba Tomson who’s from Yebongo community in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East region, received a certificate, 1 bag of NPK/ 1 Green fertilizer, 2 chemicals, 1 Motor king (Tricycle), 2 cutlasses, 1 knapsack sprayer, 1 pair of wellington boot, ½ piece of GTP, 2 bars of key soap, 1 Radio set among other farming items.

Whiles the First Runner-up position went to Bashiru Akumbange from Yorogo community, received A certificate, 1 Motor bike, 2 cutlass, 1 knapsack sprayer, 1 pair of wellington boot, ½ piece of wax print, 2 bar of key soap, 2 chemicals and 1 Radio set.

Also, the Second Runner Up when to Atugra Richmond from Dorongo, who received A certificate, 1 motorbike, 2 cutlass, 1 knapsack sprayer, 1 pair of wellington boot, ½ piece of wax print, 2 bar of key soap, 2 chemicals, 1 bag of NPK/ 1 Green fertilizer and 1 Radio set among others items.

In all, a total of 16 farmers and officials from the Department of Agriculture in the Bolgatanga municipality were awarded at the ceremony.
