Bolgatanga: Unauthorized structures to be demolished

All unapproved structures in the Bolgatanga Municipality have been earmarked to be demolished to pave way for easy access.

Some individuals have put up structures such as homes, metal fabricated containers, toilet facilities, including places worship centers in unapproved areas. These unapproved structures are either spotted under high voltage lines, waterways, or road reserves.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu in July this year, lamented the haphazard springing up of structures at unapproved locations and wondered “if residents can afford only bicycles and motorbikes” because many residents in the region who own cars sometimes park them at nearby places and trek home due to the inaccessible roads leading to their places of abode.

But those illegal structures that have been identified, will be demolished by the authorities of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly.

“I have walked around the town with members of my staff and we have identified some of those roads that people have put containers and bathrooms and all that. We are planning together with the advice of the urban roads engineer that we are going to open up those roads. If you have a bathroom, containers [at unapproved areas] we will knock them down. Some people have put mosques on those roads, we will remove them but the time hasn’t come.”

Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Rex Asanga announced the impending demolishing exercise at a press soiree held on Wednesday.
