140 women in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region have had some support from their Member of Parliament, Benson Tongo Baba.

The women, drawn from various women’s groups in the district, have received sewing machines and hair dryers each to improve their trade.

The support, the Constituency Vice Chairman, Maxwell Yeleson-Kpelim-Etme said forms part of the MP’s vision to eradicate poverty in the constituency through women’s empowerment.

“It is an initiative that he actually conceive when became MP because he saw that the poverty level here is too high. Also, the point is that most of the women here may want to join this particular trade but they can not support themselves with the machines hence the MP’s support.”

Touching on whether the beneficiaries were only members of the opposition party, the vice-chairman said that would have been an ill move as politics is about building growth and not breeding division.

“Far from that, we would not have selected only NDC women to support them. Besides, we don’t ask for their party cards before giving them the items. All that we want is to empower our women economically irrespective of political parties.”

The beneficiary women however thanked the MP for his rapid support and pledged to use the machines for their purpose.

Meanwhile, the MP a few weeks ago presented 45 pieces of water pumping machines to farmers in the area to improve farming, especially dry season farming.
