AFCON 2021: Rajevac missing Gyan

Black Stars coach Milovan Rajevac believes the current squad misses a player like Asamoah Gyan who shone, by scoring important goals, as the Serbian led Ghana to the final of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.

Rajevac’s reappointment in September last year rekindled hopes of the Black Stars returning to the summit of the continent’s football again.

He did extremely well during his first spell between 2008 and 2010, guiding Black Stars to their first Afcon final in 20 years and the World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa.

However, Rajevac appears to have lost the trust of Ghanaians, who have questioned his tactics and approach to games during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, simply because the Black Stars have been abysmal.

The four-time champions, who came into the tournament hoping to end a 40-year drought, are on the cusp of not making the knockout stage for the first time in 16 years.

Ahead of Ghana’s must-win final group game against debutants Comoros on Tuesday evening, Rajevac was asked about this squad as compared to the one he assembled in 2010, which nearly made history.

“We don’t have the same team like 2010. Not enough time for preparations. We don’t have a player like Asamoah Gyan,” Rajevac said.

“Sadly, we need to do something at short notice. I’m trying to implement these things and we’re on the right path. We lost the first game in 2010 AFCON. We will definitely improve.”

Rajevac, meanwhile, has vowed his team will stay in the competition with a win against Comoros.
