Bongo: Widow who weaved 542 baskets in 2021 awarded by Blessing Basket Project

The Blessing Basket Project, a social enterprise, based in Nyarigah a community in the Bongo District of the Upper East has crowned Anafo Atanga as the Best Artisan Entrepreneur of the year at its maiden award ceremony organised in the Awaa Community.

Mrs Atanga who is the leader of the Noyine Women Group, a group focused on weaving traditional baskets, was awarded with a cheque for the amount of ghc1,583 cheque. She was also given a sheep as part of the package. The award scheme was instituted by the Blessing Basket Project to motivate other women to work harder.

Appreciating the gesture, Anafo Atanga thanked the organisers of the ceremony and prayed that interventions do not end but will continue to come so as to help boost their business.

According to her “when I was first introduced to this basket weaving, I contemplated on whether I could do it but through committed and discipline, I mastered the courage to learn the art of weaving, and it has helped me a lot because, from this business, I am able to fend for my children since their father’s death”.

“We started with six women but now we are numbering about 500 hundred and that tells you how far we have come as a women group in the community” she added.

Meanwhile, 17 other women in the Noyine Women group were also given a sheep each to help them venture into animal rearing to support their weaving business.

On his part, Chief Paul Asaana Agoo of the Zaare Traditional council used the opportunity to thank the organisers of the award ceremony and appealed to the government to support rural businesses as he notes, it will help reduce poverty in rural areas.
