The Youth Wing of the Butchers Association in the Bolgatanga Municipality has accused the Chief Butcher, Tindanzor Kolduug of putting his own parochial interests ahead of the collective interests of the group.

According to them, the Chief Butcher was easily persuaded when he was told by the Assembly that, he was going to have an office in the new abattoir at Yorogo. They claim that this explained why he, [the chief butcher] foisted the decision of relocating to Yorogo on them. The young butchers also alleged that the Chief Butcher had been promised a monthly salary and a stake in the abattoir.

One of the Youth Leaders, Sakora Yakubu, who spoke to A1 Radio when the News Team visited the Yorogo facility explained that the current situation is causing them so much discomfort as there are no slabs for butchering cattle as well as inadequate water supply. Mr. Yakubu added that the gate through which the cattle passed through “is just like somebody’s door” and as such poses a lot of danger to the Butchers.

He stated that “we have many problems, coming here is a problem, the machines are not working, we don’t have the slabs we are just suffering”.

He said the challenges they are encountering explains their initial resistance to the relocation. “It is our work and we know the work so that is why we said we won’t come, there are many things here that the Assembly has not done so we knew we will come and suffer and that was why decided not to come,” the Youth LEader said.

He explained that the Assembly only moved them in to come and suffer and possibly lose their jobs because the Assembly had promised to give them vans and Tricycle Motors to convey their meat to the market but nothing has been done yet adding that they have to pay for the services of Tricycle operators to convey the meat. This, they say, is crippling their business.

“We are not comfortable over here and we are pleading with the Assembly to see if they could let us go back to our old place so they can come and fixed the various challenges here,” he revealed.
