All is set for the government’s Townhall Meeting on the E-levy at the Upper West Regional Library in Wa, scheduled for today, February 21, 2022. Participants have been drawn from all the political parties available in the region, Heads of Departments, representatives from the Regional House of Chiefs, representatives from labour organisations like the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Teachers and Education Workers’ Union (TWEU) et al as well as all other professional bodies that matter in the conversation around the E-levy.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, the Upper West Regional Communications Director of the NPP, Bukari Ali explained that the Town Hall Meeting has garnered massive interest after wide publication on both social and traditional media platforms across the region.

All things being equal, the meeting would start at 1 pm. Mr. Ali indicated that the NDC’s decision to decline an invitation to participate in the E-levy Town Hall Meeting does not change anything about what is to happen.

“Political Parties have been invited, We followed up to know whether or not they have received their invitations and quite a number of them indicated that they have received them, the development as to whether they will come or not, they have not indicated that to us as of yet. Whatever it [their decision] is, I am not sure it is going to change anything because the town hall meetings are not only for the political parties,” he explained.

Mr. Ali admitted that while the E-levy was received in the Upper West Region with mixed feelings, the Town Hall Meeting provides the best opportunity for government to properly explain the E-levy to the people of the region while residents could also use the same platform to ask the relevant questions.

“Mixed reactions, a lot of people have spoken so far about the e-levy on social media, mainstream media and when you meet them in person. Some of them are obviously not happy the E-levy is being proposed due to, in part, lack of understanding or proper information. Others are saying that once it is about the development of the country, it should be rolled out. I think this is largely why the Finance Minister, the Information Minister, the Interior Minister and other dignitaries are coming to throw more light on the e-levy,” he said.

The E-levy Town Hall Meeting in the Upper West Region is the 4th in the series of meetings held by the government to disseminate information about the E-levy. The most recent meeting was in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital while the two others were held at Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region and Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
