Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, Member of Parliament for Wa Central has fumed over the omission of the ‘Waala’ as an ethnic group in the Upper West Region in a book titled ‘History of Ghana (book) for Basic Schools’.
Earlier today, pictures of a book titled ‘History of Ghana (book) for Basic Schools’ authored by Francis Benjamin Appiah and Henry David Appiah popped up on Facebook.
On page 20 of the book, the authors sought to educate learners on the number of ethnic groups in the country and where they could be located on the map of the country capturing all 16 regions of the country under the title “A map showing some of the sub-ethnic groups under the main ethnic groups in Ghana”.
In the portion of the Upper West Region, “Lobi”, “Sissala” and “Dagaba” were named as the sub-ethnic groups.
The Wa Central MP took to his Facebook page to fume over the development.
“See this book! It’s supposed to be a textbook of history of Ghana and supposed to be studied by all Ghanaians. It has captured Ghanaian ethnic groups and forgot that there is an ethnic group of the Wala people. Can this piece of work represent the core concept of the history of Ghana? Of course, no one within the Wala ethnic group will accept this wasted effort at writing a textbook!”
“I called the Minister of Education, Hon Yaw Edutwum to discuss the anger of our people about the deliberate failure and abuse of academic work. He immediately agreed with me and has started working on it!”
“This uninformed collection of written matter cannot represent our collective history and will never be accepted as a textbook on the history of Ghana. The least we can accept is TO IMMEDIATELY WITHDRAW THAT BOOK FROM THE SHELVE HOSTING ACADEMIC WORKS AND IT SHOULD HAPPEN NOW! Thanks to the Minister for the prompt response. Looking forward to hearing from him soonest!”
Earlier, Jinpenhi Naa, Naa Kadri Ibrahim, the spokesperson for the Overlord of the Waala Traditional Area, in the Upper West Region, Naa Fuseini Pelpuo also to social media to vent his anger on what he described as a “blatant disregard for the Waala tribe”.
