Member of Parliament for Lawra constituency in the Upper West Region, Bede Ziedeng has appealed to the Transport Ministry to increase the flight schedules to Wa instead of the current three times weekly by Passion Air.

The MP noted that the region has grown to a point where the majority of its populace would want to use flights as a preferred means of transport to the national capital. As such, the MP urged the Transport Ministry and the operators of Passion Air to consider increasing the scheduled flights for the week.

Mr. Ziedeng made the call on the Floor of Parliament after he commended the Minister of Transport, Ofori Asiamah for his relentless efforts in ensuring the operationalization of commercial airlines at the Wa Airport after its rehabilitation.

In October 2021, Mr. Ziedeng filed a question on the Floor of Parliament seeking clarification why the Wa Airport was not highly patronized by commercial airlines was the case of Kumasi and Tamale Airports.

Mr. Asiamah in answering the question noted the rehabilitation of the Wa airport was completed in 2019 and this paved way for Africa World Airlines (AWA) to start operations in 2019 but said some flights had to be suspended due to some safety concerns relating to the flight approach path coupled with the outbreak of COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Minister indicated that the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority at the time conducted series of Obstacles Limitation Surface (OLS) Standards that define the limits to which objects may penetrate the airspace of an airport and based on that it was realized that some masts were penetrating the OLS surfaces, thus breaching the required standards.

But in July 2021, the Minister took the necessary measures to remedy the challenges that affected the operation of Wa airport, thus, hindrance Passion Air commenced operations in December 2021.
