The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu has said the government’s 1 District 1 Factory (1D1F) initiative is effectively working in the region.

The 1D1F initiative was introduced by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led government on August 25, 2017. According to the policy, every District across the country was to benefit from a factory.

According to the government, this will change the nature of Ghana’s economy from one which is dependent on the import of finished goods and the export of raw materials to one which is focused on manufacturing value addition and export of processed goods.

But the policy’s inception, many have been sceptical about government’s resolve to build factories in all of the 15 districts and municipalities in the Upper East Region five years after its introduction.

The Regional Minister, after inspecting one of the factories at Yorogo a suburb of the Bolgatanga municipality, reminded the populace of the viability of the government’s policy. The factory at Yorogo is expected to be a leather processing factory. Mr. Yakubu said it will be soon handed over for operationalisation.

“We have come here to inspect 1D1F. And I want to emphasize that it is actually in the Upper East because people have been saying that the government has been talking about 1D1F and in the Upper East Region, we don’t have any. We are here together and you can see the building out there fantastically built and it is 1D1F. And I want the media to actually take this up and hype it, and let everybody know that 1D1F is actually working in the Upper East, “he said.

According to the Minister, the leather factory which is under the ministry of trade and industry has its funding from the government of Ghana, over sixty (60) graduates are waiting to begin working in the factory as soon as everything is ready. Some 100 Youth will be employed later.

The Minister also hinted that additional factories under the 1D1F initiative will be soon opened in the region. According to him, there is one of such factories in the Bongo district as well the Bawku enclave.

The Upper East regional Minister Stephen Yakubu, therefore, used the opportunity to call on investors to come into the Upper East region and partner with the government to put up more factories as he describe the region as a raw material hub.
