More than 70 per cent of the loans owed to the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) in the Upper East Region can be traced to the Bawku Municipality and Tempane District.

The current conflicts in the area have, however, made it difficult for credit officers from MASLOC to trace debtors to collect monies owed to the Centre.

“Unfortunately, most of the loans that we have, happen to be in the Bawku zone. Specifically, Tempane, Bawku Municipal. When you look at this basically, more than 70 per cent of the unrecovered loans are there. You know what is going on currently within that territory”.

This revelation was made by the Upper East Regional Manager of MASLOC, Ustaz Oman when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East today, March 14, 2022.

He made this comment on the back of an earlier revelation that the Upper East Region owed more than Ghc7 million in unrecovered debts.

Mr. Oman said stringent efforts are being made to ensure that these monies are repaid by the debtors.

“There is a target to be given to everybody [credit officers] and then resources would also be provided to every credit officer so that we can do what we are going to do,” he said.

He continued to say that because of the high level of indebtedness in the region and across the country, it is becoming increasing difficult for MASLOC to continue to disburse loans.
