UE: We’ll not pay for bungalows – GNAT to GES

Charles Ateem, the Bolgatanga Municipal Chairman for the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has given a strong indication that teachers would not comply with the directive from the GES asking teachers to pay 10 per cent of their basic salaries for the government apartments they stay in.

Mr. Ateem, speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East said, it was rather unfortunate that teachers would be through this extra financial burden.

He said even worse is that in 2015 when this issue first surfaced, exceptions were made for headteachers, housemasters and mistress and others whose roles were vital to the running of the school along with ensuring the safety of the children.

This new directive, Mr. Ateem said is a blanket one that does not recognise the extra special roles some teachers have to pay.

“This issue has not been taken with kind interest by the teachers because we think as teachers, we have not been motivated enough. Since we have not been motivated enough, why do we have to pay?”

“Besides that, looking at most of the states of the bungalows in senior high schools, they are very bad. Many of the teachers there have had to put it in good shape so that they can live there. Most of the housemasters and the HODs living there have to use their own money to maintain those government bungalows. So [we are] maintaining these bungalows at our own cost and you are still telling us to pay? We are not going to accept these kinds of payments,” he said.
