13-year-old Abigail Boabil, was one of the pupils of Yagzore Primary School in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region whose images were circulated on social media. The picture showed Miss Boabil and her mates lying uncomfortably on their bellies to study because there was no furniture.

Abigail, whose dream was to become a responsible citizen in future so she could help her Motherland Ghana even though the future was hazy due to the unfavourable conditions they were going through. She was on the brink of closing the chapter of these aspirations as the channel through which she could have achieved her dreams was not helpful.

A classroom that should ordinarily be stocked with furniture to help pupils study was not what these pupils were experiencing, as they often battled with ants and termites for enough space to rest their bellies and learn.

Parents of these children lament how they were spending much on soaps and washing powders virtually every day because they wanted their wards to be clean and fresh in school.

“The way ants used to bite us, the other time an ant bit my stomach and when I tried rolling over it bit my back again” a pupil revealed.

“Every day when we close from school we will have to go home and wash our uniforms and we do this through out the week and my mother will be complaining,” another said.

The pupils breathed a sigh of relief as 115 pieces of dual desk furniture were handed over to them by the Talensi District Assembly. They expressed their excitement, as they say, the timely intervention will go a long way to help them in acquiring knowledge and reduce the cost their parents would have gone through to buy washing soaps and powders.

After the pictures flooded Social Media, the Talensi District Assembly led by Mr. Thomas Duanab Wuni went to the aid of the pupils who were almost losing their future in education by handing over 115 dual desks furniture to the school to ease the burden.

According the District Chief Executive plans were already far advanced to help fix the furniture deficits in the Yagzore Primary School and others alike.

“Before I even became a DCE, these are schools especially the ones close to me, that I drive past almost all the time and the situation in them is not anything better, I see a lot of broken tables and walls so I just decided and said no we need to go back and look at the structure and furniture situation,” he stated.

He added that “we are not responding to the viral pictures that were circulated on social media because we are not working on social media. Yagzore Primary School and other schools alike were already in the books as those who lacked furniture, so we came in today to fix the situation”.

On her part, the District Director of Education, Madam Christiana Ayinezooya thanked the Assembly for the timely intervention.
