The District Chief Executive for the Kassena Nankana West District, Gerard Ataogye has assured commuters and residents of putting a temporary pathway to aid residents after the collapse of the Paga-Navio steel bridge.

According to the DCE, the steel bridge collapsed after a heavy-duty articulated truck loaded with rosewood used it.

The 30-year-old bridge, which already had severe structural defects, could not withstand the weight of the truck, thus leading to its total collapse.

When the DCE spoke to A1 Radio, he indicated that the bridge was already in a deplorable state, and measures were being taken to work on it before the unfortunate incident occurred.

Mr, Atoagye said the Assembly would liaise with Feeder Roads Department to provide a temporal situation.

“I have reached out with the Feeder Road Department in the region and much assurance was given. So, from tomorrow March 24th we will put some temporary pathway for commuters especially our nurses and teachers to be able to cross to their various workplaces”, he said.

Touching on the importance of the bridge, the DCE said it links several communities to the district capital; Paga, therefore, strenuous efforts would be made to find a more permanent solution.

Mr Ataogye also assured residents and commuters that the Road Ministry has informed him that it is working to find a lasting solution to the bridge as well as work on some of the culverts in the area.

Meanwhile, the driver and other two passengers who were on the truck were sent to a nearby health facility for checkups and later taken by the Kassena Nankana Municipal police for further interrogation.
