Catholic Church launches TV evangelism project

The Catholic Church has launched a television broadcasting project which will serve as an effective instrument to teach and ensure the realization of the basic social principles of the Catholic Church.

The broadcast and transmission of the Lumen Christi TV will be done via digital terrestrial and satellite transmission. This will provide coverage into the 19 Dioceses and the sole Vicariate of Ghana whilst satellite broadcast will give coverage all over Africa.

The yet to be aired TV channel of the catholic church is coming at a time the population of the church in Ghana is dwindling according to the Ghana Statistical Service.

But speaking exclusively to A1 NEWS during a Diocesan launch of the Lumen Christi TV in Bolgatanga, Bishop of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese, Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta expressed optimism that with the introduction of the TV channel, the church hopes to regain its status through evangelism.

“Going by the census information that we have received, it looks like we have lost some 3 percent [of the church’s population]. If we have evidence like this showing that we were doing well but have not been doing well, it is to help us re-strategize. Certainly, this [Lumen Christi TV] is part of the way of reaching out to people. Mine you there are so many people who are no longer go to church or they don’t have the time. But if we reach them from this means, you can get them back to stay in the church. Even though they may not be going to church, they can consider themselves as part and parcel of the Catholic Church.”

The diocesan launch of the Lumen Christi TV project and a town hall meeting were under a ‘Living the authentic Christian social teachings through mass media evangelization.

Laity Council Chairman for the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese, Hermas Azanoore who underscored the importance of television broadcasting said the Lumen Christi TV when operationalized would serve as a standpoint on which the church will place the lamp of Christ.

He added that the Catholic TV will make the cry louder to resound in the ears of all the concerned persons and groups.

The Vicar General and Parish Priest of the Our Lady Queen of Africa (OLA) parish, Reverend Father Lawrence Azure said the plan to set up a television channel for the Catholic Church is in the right direction since other sister denominations have taken the lead to evangelized through social and traditional mediums.
