Sampson Tangombu Chiragia, Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central has opined that due to the excessive politicisation of student leadership at the tertiary level, students have lost their ability to influence national decisions.
Mr. Tangombu Chiragia explained that because students who want to vie for leadership positions seek financial support from political actors and parties, when they are elected into office, they are unable to criticise the political parties who sponsored their bids for leadership. To this end, the entire student body that follows the leadership is denied the voice they desperately need.
Citing the passage of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) as an example, Mr. Chiragia thought the conversation around the E-levy should have provided the student body with the perfect platform to make its stance known and also seek to influence the actions of the government because of the huge impact the levy would have on the finances of students.
To the dismay of the MP, student leaders failed to live up to the task.
He said this when he spoke in a One-on-One interview with A1 Radio’s Mark Smith on Day Break Upper East.
Mr. Tangombu Chiragia called on student leaders to be committed to furthering the course of the students they represent rather than the political parties they seek sponsorship from.
