Professor David Millar, the Founder and Vice-Chancellor of the Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies (MITDS) has expressed worry about comments on the state of agriculture in Ghana by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

Professor Millar, speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show explained that it is always a big worry to listen to the Minister speak on issues concerning agriculture.

“Any pronouncement from the Agric Minister is always worrying. He doesn’t seem to have his feet on the ground. I do not know the set of advisors that he has. He needs to go outside the box, outside his comfort zone and do a bit of soul searching and fact-finding for himself”.

“Every now and then, he keeps being misinformed and he keeps misrepresenting the issues. When you want to raise concerns, there is no listening ear. There is no space for you to discuss any alternative. More and more, we begin to wonder whether he is predisposed to farmers’ interests, is he serving a special set of interests, or his own serving his own interest,” he quizzed.

Professor Millar went on to say that “if he is here to serve the people, he needs to hear the people. If you really want to hear the people, you have to come out of your comfort zone”.
