The DCE for the Builsa South District in the Upper East Region, Daniel Kwame Gariba is unhappy about the nature of the roads in his area. Mr Gariba admitted that to properly tap into the agriculture potential area, particularly in the production of rice, roads within the district need fixing.

The DCE’s concern about the roads is even exacerbated by the unending delay in the construction of the Fumbisi – Uwasi and the Fumbisi – Kanjaga roads.]

To this end, some preliminary work is expected to begin on the Fumbisi – Kanjaga road. The road development would be led by the Builsa South District Assembly.

He said this when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, Friday, May 6, 2022.

Mr Gariba explained that “if you produce and you cannot carry the food to market centres, then it makes the cost of transportation of these goods to market centres very expensive. The Youasi road was awarded on contract.”

“The problem in this country is that people will take contracts and fail to deliver. I have had cause to call the contractor on the Fumbisi – Uwasi road a number of times. The Regional Feeder Roads Director would bear me out that I have always been on his neck as far as that road [Uwasi – Fumbisi] and the Fumbisi Kanjaga road is concerned. We are not looking at it ending in Kanjaga, we are looking at it end somewhere in Doninga,” he said.

The DCE explained that but for the government’s policy to put a hold on new road projects, the Kanjaga – Fumbisi road would have been constructed this year.

This notwithstanding, Mr Gariba explained that as part of critical roads that are expected to be submitted by MMDCEs to the central government, the two roads would be forwarded for consideration.

“The rainy season is here with us again, and we know how bad these roads are. The Kanjaga road, as an Assembly, we are taking steps to see how we can do on our own to just make the road a bit more motorable for commuters on that road. From next week, we are going to see some action on that road. That is not a comprehensive approach, but it is to ameliorate the suffering of the people who ply this road every now an then,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Gariba, speaking on the same platform said he is convinced that despite the pooh-poohing of the government’s ambitious One Village One Dam project (1V1D), by opponents and critics of the Akufo-Addo led government, the programme has been largely successful.

Mr Gariba explained that in his area, 10 of the dams have been successfully completed and are serving the people of the area. He explained that during the dry season, animals no longer go long distances in search of water.

Again, residents in the area, who are largely farmers, can continue their farming throughout the year because of the availability of water.
