The Upper East Regional Director of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Lawyer Jaladeen Abdulai has expressed some level of worry about the recent rising trend of human rights abuse cases recorded in the region within the last few years.

According to Lawyer Abdulai Jaladeen since 2015, the region has recorded not less than two hundred cases of human rights abuses each year; a situation he describes as alarming and one that needs urgent attention.

Mr. Abdulai revealed that, in the first quarter of 2022, 66 cases of human rights abuses were recorded. He estimates that the figure could soar past 200 before the close of the year.

Speaking at the launch of the Widows and Orphans Movement’s (WOM) Upper East Regional Fund for abused persons, Mr Abdulai noted with concern that, “these are even cases where people are bold enough to come and report” creating the impression that often, many other cases are not reported.

“If in the first quarter alone, we have received 66 cases of human rights cases then you should know the situation is alarming. It is about time we did more education for people to understand that issues bothering human rights; it is not about me, it is not about you. No matter your status in life your rights can be abused.”

He, therefore, called on residents of the region to not shy away whenever there is the need to report to the Commission on issues bothering on human rights abuses as it is the body that is empowered to handle such cases in the country.

Meanwhile, Mr Abdulai again observed that most victims of rape rush to take their baths after the incident occurs.

The victims, he said, do this to wash away the thoughts of the unwanted act. The Regional Director of CHRAJ explained that bathing after rape washes away evidence that would be key in the prosecution of perpetrators of such acts.

He stated, “you see, when somebody is sexually abused, assuming there is a defilement case or any case, and you go and bathe, there is a tendency for you to wash the specimen that will be found in your body. For instance, when the man sleeps with you and there IS sperm in your body and you go to bathe, you would have washed the sperm away.”
