Residents of Adamtombiisiko, a community within the Konkoa-Daliga Electoral Area in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region say they are in dire need of potable water. This is after a contractor working on the community’s mechanized borehole project absconded.

Adamtombiisiko is a farming community with about 150 households and a population of over 500. Unfortunately, the community does not have a source of potable drinking water.

According to the community members who spoke in an exclusive interview with A1 News, the community is suffering from the lack of clean drinking water. The only source of water for the community is the Vea dam.

Two months to the 2020 general election, the Bongo District Assembly with funding from the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), through the former District Chief Executive Peter Ayinbisa awarded a contract for the construction of a mechanised borehole for the community.

Almost two years down the line, the contractor is yet to complete work. The community members believe that the contractor has abandoned the project.

It is out of this frustration, the community members are calling on the contractor to go back and complete the work in order for them to also have access to clean drinking water.

Ayaribire Alfred, a community member who spoke to A1 Radio David Azure on behalf of the community members said “we want to tell the contractor that he should come back to the site and complete the work for us. We the community members are suffering to get water. And when they came here in October 2020, everyone in Adamtombiisiko was very happy because we were going to have a borehole in the shortest possible time. But now, everyone here is very sad and disappointed because of what is happening. We feel like the contractor is not willing to construct the borehole for us”

Mr. Ayaribire added that the manner in which the Bongo District Assembly is handling the situation is problematic. The community members say they feel the community is not part of Bongo District nor Ghana.

According to him, community members were happily working voluntarily for the contractor because the community needed water badly only for the contractor to disappoint them.

In an interview with the Assembly Member for the Konkoa Daliga Electoral Area, Anabia Solomon Asampana, told A1 News that he is even more disappointed and frustrated than the community members. He said he finds it difficult to comprehend why the contractor will abandon the project without any explanation to him or the community members.

Mr. Anabia, said all his follow-ups at the Assembly indicate that the contractor should have been completed the project and handed it over to the community a long time ago.

According to the Assembly Member, the District engineer in charge of water and electricity told him the contractor has been fully paid and therefore has no excuse to abandon the project.
