The Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service has arrested 14 Burkina Faso nationals for sneaking into Ghana through unapproved routes.

The individuals were aged between 14 and 76 years. The 14 individuals admitted to crossing into Ghana using canoes on the Black Volta. They were headed to the southern part of the country in search of menial jobs.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Public Affairs Officer of the Upper West Regional Command of the GIS, Ibn Yussif Abdul-Moomin and copied to A1 Radio.

Read the full statement below.

“Today, Monday, 31st May, 2022, about 2200HRS, the vigilant personnel at the Lawra Municipal Command led by the Sector Commander, DSI LAWRENCE AGYEKUM-HENE apprehended fourteen Burkinabes (14) who had sneaked into Ghana through unapproved routes on Black Volta River ostensibly to proceed to the Southern part of Ghana for menial jobs among others. Two of the migrants were transiting Ghana into Ivory Coast. They were onboard sprinter buses with registration numbers AS-9744-11 and AW-4019-12 respectively.

Their ages ranged between fourteen (14) and seventy-Six (76) and comprised ten (10) males and four (04) females. The irregular migrants admitted to using the Black Volta River into Ghana on canoes but weren’t aware that it was an illegality.

It was revealed that one border resident (Name withheld) is their accomplice in this recurring illegality and at a fee per head and during odd hours. The Nationality of the said suspect is yet to be confirmed. Nonetheless, we’re convinced that the suspect operates in a network in both Ghana and Burkina Faso.

Whereas we’re not unaware of the porous nature of our land borders, we can assure the few unrepentant recalcitrants that ‘time will catch up with them’ and the law will take its course. At the time that the land borders are opened, it’s intriguing that migrants will still patronize unapproved routes despite the dangers associated with it. The use of unapproved routes to and from Ghana remains illegal and must not be compromised in any form.

Inspired by the Comptroller General and the Upper West Regional Commander, we shall leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of undocumented migration.

The irregular migrants were cautioned and duly repatriated back to Burkina Faso through the Hamile Border Post.

Submitted for your information.

  1. This is quite good on the part of the immigration service in upper west region.May God give the strength and to continue to right to protect good people of the region and Ghana at large.
I m however disappointed in the reporter by writing upper west in the caption but as he proceeds he said upper east.
Gone are the days when such careless mix up were the order of the day.Nowadays, Ghanaians are more enlightened about their country and journalists who educators should know better than the reading public.
Is it done intentional to down rate upper west?
Because such news should not have come from upper west.
Is it because the writer doesn’t know the basic political geography of Ghana?
Please, I feel quite offended when the names of the regions can be gotten by simple Google within some seconds and yet it’s mix up and the reader is confused whether the story is about upper west or upper east.
