The Member of Parliament for the National Democratic Congress in the Builsa South Constituency of the Upper East Region, Dr Clement Abass Apaak has indicated that the Ghc25 seed capital released for the building of the National Cathedral by the Finance Ministry was an insult to not only Ghanaians but God.

According to him, President Akufo-Addo’s decision to use State resources to execute the project was already a misplaced priority before God.

Speaking to A1radioonline.com, the MP explained that it would not have been a call for worry if President Akufo-Addo was using his personal resources to build such a cathedral.

“We all know the genesis of the National Cathedral thing. And I believe a lot of Ghanaians would not have had a problem with the building of the cathedral if the President was using his salary to build it because he made his personal pledge to God. But here we are, wanting or having already used state resources to do that.”

“Assuming someone else was doing this, how will the president react. I bet you that, God himself is not happy with this cathedral thing. It is an insult to God, and He (God) will not forgive him. If you are a father and your son wants to make you happy with something, and in the end, that thing that he’s doing is causing a lot of controversy, will you be happy as a father again? This is exactly what Akufo-Addo is doing to God,” he said.

The lawmaker added that the “Ghc25 million could have been used to help cushion other sectors especially the National Service Scheme or Nation Builders’ Corps personnel.”

Dr. Apaak stressed that “now, that the economy is not doing well. We were expecting that if such money was there, at least the government could have used it to supply various schools with chalks, and other learning materials, especially for the basic schools that have just resumed. But here we are, focusing on a personal thing. So, if someone concludes that this government is greedy, will the person be out of point? Definitely, no. That cathedral as I earlier mentioned is a personal pledge made by the President and not the entire Ghanaians. It is a shame.”
