The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has admonished the general public to buy food from vendors who have Food Hygiene Permit. The Authority enjoins street food vendors to apply for a permit at a cost of GHC5.00 after which they would be under registration and licensing.

Abel Ndego, Regulatory Officer at the Upper East Regional office of the FDA said food vendors are expected to display their certificates at a vantage point in their workplaces.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today, June 15, 2022, Mr. Ndego said the FDA initiated the Street Food Vending Licensing Scheme to promote food safety and public health.

“The FDA has actually initiated what we called Street Food Vending Licensing Scheme. You would notice that prior to that most of the street food vendors were literally operating without adhering to the safety precautions and hygiene issues were not really attended to.”

“We’ve seen the need to rope them into the regulatory framework so that we would be able to at least ensure that we are meeting the basic health standard. For now, what we are doing is that we are bringing all street food vendors under compliance.”

“We are also appealing to the general public to take note that when you go to buy from a street food vendor look out for their certification. It should be at a very visible place where potential consumers would be able to see.”

The Authority consequently urged the public to avoid patronising food from vendors who did not have the Street Food Vending Permit. Mr. Ndego said when people insist on buying from only certified street food vendors it would force all other vendors to fall in line with the regulation.

The FDA is having a weeklong celebration for this year’s World Food Safety Day on the theme, “Safer food, better health.” World Food Safety Day is celebrated annually on June 7 to draw attention and mobilise action to prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks and improve human health.
