The Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, Rex Asanga has commenced his much talked about sanitation campaign dubbed ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ in the municipality.
The initiative, he said, is aimed at curbing the sanitation menace amongst residents especially those within the central business district.
He said “today we are here to clean the main lorry station and look at concrete measures that can collectively help us always keep our surroundings clean. So, as we are doing this today, we will institute a monthly cleanup exercise, especially at the business centres.”
“Our drainage systems ought to be clean, you could see how sand and other plastic waste were under them, so this will be a monthly exercise. Let me add that sanitation laws in the municipality will be operationalized fully. You either clean your frontage every week or month or risk seeing our task force in action.”
The MCE stressed that he will have a series of discussions with authorities that matter to see how a special sanitation levy may be introduced to help champion the cause.
“We will have a series of deliberations on whether or not to implement a special sanitation levy where people who may not want to get their hands dirty, will pay others to do the dirty work for them. As I said earlier, we can’t continue to behave this way, Bolgatanga is the regional capital yet we can’t pride ourselves on being the clean town. We must therefore wake up from our slumber.”
The exercise which took place at the main lorry station in Bolgatanga brought together station masters, drivers, shop owners and passengers to join the cause.
The Upper East Regional GPRTU, Abdul Atinga gave the assurance that they will keep track of the exercise every month as cleanness, they say, is next to godliness.
