After sharing money like groundnuts during COVID-19, you want people to pay E-levy? Wa West MP chides gov’t

The government may continue to grapple with the reluctance of the general populace toward the payment of taxes. This is because the government has failed to properly invest the monies it accrues through the payment of taxes toward the general well-being of Ghanaians.

This is according to the Member of Parliament for Wa West in the Upper West Region, Peter Lanchene Toobu. He said this when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today, Tuesday, June 28, 2022.

Mr. Toobu explained that it is no surprise that Ghanaians are unwilling to pay taxes after a shocking revelation by a member of the NPP and Parliamentary Candidate for Sagnarigu, Felicia Tetteh. Madam Tetteh was allegedly captured in a leaked audio tape claiming that she got about a Ghc100,000 of COVID funds while some allocations were also made for regional and constituency executives.

“Here we are today. The amount of money, they used during the COVID period, during the election; sharing money like groundnuts. It is being confirmed by one of their own. The amount of money the president is using in flying in luxurious jets for a poor country like Ghana, you come and talk about tax?”

“Recklessness and irresponsibility would anger the Ghanaian people and they will go ahead and collect the tax and do whatever you want to do, we are not going to pay. The results are clear,” he said.

He said even before the implementation of the E-levy, the Minority made a strong case against the E-levy because the current government’s reckless expenditure had driven the country’s economy into a deep ditch.
