Ghana has made great strides in recent years with more than 80 percent of the population having access to safe water.

WASH Technical Specialist and Chairman for non-governmental organizations in water and sanitation, Yaw Atta Arhin said Ghana has done remarkably well in the provision and access to safe water.

“When it comes to access to safe water Ghana has done quite well. At least according to the multiple indicator cluster survey which was done in 2018 by the Ghana Statistical Service, we’re almost 80 percent in terms of access to safe water. According to the joint monitoring platform, we are at 86 percent. According to the population and housing census Ghana is currently at 87.7 percent in terms of basic access.”

Mr. Arhin however mentioned that equity and water quality is still a challenge.

“Of course, we have challenges with water quality issues; we have challenges with equity where Greater Accra can have almost 98 percent access and North East can have 51 percent. So the inequities are there but we have done well.”
