The Member of Parliament for Nabdam and Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament Health Select Committee, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane has called for a national dialogue on the National Health Insurance Scheme.

According to him the NHIS now is not the social insurance system that it ought to be.

“The NHIA as it stands now is not a social insurance system as we’ve wished it to be and we need to have a national dialogue on it, the way forward.”

Speaking on to Mark Kwasi Ahumah Smith on A1Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, Dr. Nawaane said although there had been an increase in disbursement to the NHIS in terms of the value of services rendered by the service providers, the value of addition is not enough as compared to what the service providers spend.

“There’s been an increase. I can say that if you take the OPD for example, there’s been an increase of almost a hundred percent over the previous values but if you go to some other services you realized that the increase is minimal.”

“The problem is that inflation eats up all these increase,” he said.

The Nabdam MP said the government should accept that there’s a problem with the NHIS and call for a national dialogue.
