The Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has increased water tariff by 21% and the electricity tariff by 27.15%.

The new tariffs start September 1. The regulator announced this on Monday, August 15.

The tariffs, according to the PURC are business-friendly. This is according to the Upper East Regional Director of the PURC, Seth Kponyo.

Speaking to Mark Kwasi Ahumah Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show yesterday, Tuesday, August 16, 2022, Mr. Kponyo explained that the PURC understands perfectly, the current financial constraints Ghanaians are under, particularly businesses.

To this end, the tariffs have been structured in a way that allow businesses to still operate with very minimal costs.

“For this review, because of the conditions that persist and the complaints of the effect that reviews have on businesses, the Commission has now approved a more business-friendly tariff for the barbers and the tailors, welders, the hairdressers et al. You will realise that the amount they are going to pay now is going to be less than how much we pay for domestic; what we use in our various homes.”

Mr. Kponyo continued to say “previously, we paid less for domestic tariffs but now, the reverse is true. That is the beauty of this particular tariff.”
